Te Anu. The bus trip from Dunedin got more and more exciting as the flatness of the land gave way to hills, and finally snow covered mountains in the distance. All along the way millions and millions of sheep were contentedly muching away in the fields. Not to mention cows and deer.
Anyhow when you come into Te Anu you drive down the main street which has a flowered and palm tree lined median, interesting shops, and dead ahead, the lake, which is ringed all around by mountains, many of which had snow, despite the mild winter this year. There is a paved path along the lake side, with amazing views of the water and mountains.
Many people come to Te Anu because it's the start of the Milford Treck, one of the lovliest of the NZ treks that people from all over the world come to make. There are many 307+ day trecks in this area, and we met a lot of the "treckkies" in the hostel. We, however, came first for the ride, and then for the overnight cruise on the Milford Sound. The trip to Milford by bus takes about 2 hours, and it, too passes snow covered mountains with meandering streams bordered by every colored lupen imaginable and hills covered with sheep and lambs.
Waterfalls, trees covered with the NZ version of Spanish moss, the continental divide and countless switchbacks with a view in every direction....You name it, it's here.
